SITUATIONAL UPDATE
The H1N1 Pandemic is currently still active around the world, especially in the southern hemisphere, and the World Health Organization (WHO) is still listing the Pandemic at the highest Alert Level: 6.
Within the United States, there are no reports of widespread H1N1 activity.
Some pandemics can come in 3 waves (for example, the 1918 'Spanish' Flu Pandemic). The H1N1 Pandemic in the U.S. is coming off of the 2nd wave, however, it is unknown at this time if the U.S. will see a third wave of infections occur. Thus, we need to remain vigilant, and the Health Department strongly encourages those Winnebago County residents who have not received their H1N1 vaccinations to get them as soon as possible. Additionally, businesses are asked to maintain good hygiene practices and to ensure they have good response plans in place that will assist them in handling any public health emergencies that may occur.
Recently, the Winnebago County Public Health dept. issued a press release identifying a pertussis (also known as whooping cough) outbreak in Winnebago County. As of May 26th, Winnebago County has 32 confirmed cases of pertussis.
