The Winnebago County Health Department created the Black Male Health program in 2001 to address the vast health disparities that exists between African-American males and the general population in Winnebago County. “The Black Male Health Community Action Team is a community-based advisory committee of the WCHD’s Black Male Health program. Through the efforts of these dedicated community members, it has delivered substantial preventative health services to the African-American community and the community at large,” said Mark Hunter, Black Male Health program coordinator.
 
The keynote speaker for this event is author, essayist, activist, Kevin Powell. Kevin is also a writer, public speaker, and businessman and, 2010 a Democratic candidate for Congress in Brooklyn, New York. A product of extreme poverty, welfare, fatherlessness, and a single mother-led household, is a native of Jersey City, New Jersey and was educated at New Jersey’s Rutgers University. A longtime resident of Brooklyn, New York, Kevin has published ten books, including his new title, Open Letters to America (Soft Skull Press). Kevin was a cast member on the first season of MTV’s “The Real World”; has hosted and produced programming for HBO and BET.
 
This a public event, sponsored by the Winnebago County Health Department. Tickets for the banquet priced at $25.00 per person. A reserved table for eight is $200.00.
