For Immediate Release
Violence Enders is Awarded a $2,500 Grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois

“The Violence Enders Program of the Winnebago County Health Department has been awarded a grant of $2,500 by the In Youth We Trust fund of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois,” Karen Lytwyn, Project Director for the Violence Prevention Collaborative, said today.

According to Ms. Lytwyn, the grant will be used by the Violence Enders at Kennedy Middle School to promote positive, behavior among Kennedy students and to spread the anti-violence message to other schools.

“The Violence Enders program has had a tremendous impact here,” said Kennedy Middle School Principal Theresa Kallstrom. “You can really see a difference in the atmosphere and how problems are approached. Students are learning that they do not have to fight or argue, and that there are plenty of ways to resolve conflict peacefully.”

Through monthly visits to other Rockford schools, the group is spreading its non-violence message to other students in the district. The goal, Kalllstrom said, is for the concept to catch on at other schools that will then implement their own Violence Enders program.

“The Violence Enders program at Kennedy Middle School has grown tremendously during the past two years,” said Ms. Lytwyn.  “The grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois will give us additional resources to allow the Violence Enders to continue to promote anti-violence principles throughout Kennedy and other elementary and middle schools. ”

The Violence Enders Program of the Winnebago County Health Department’s Violence Prevention Collaborative started in the 2009-10 school year with Pat Crowell, an Americorp intern, recruiting ten Kennedy students; currently, over 200 students are involved in the program.

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is the area’s largest provider of grants and services. Stewarding almost $50 million in assets and over 400 funds, the foundation awards over 3 million each year on behalf of caring donors who want to give something back to their community.
