In the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks the USA Freedom Corps was created. The Medical Reserve Corps and Citizen Corps are component organizations within the USA Freedom Corps.
Medical Reserve Corps consists of active or retired health professionals, individuals with relevant health related skills and many other area residents working in harmony with local health and government officials, professional emergency responders, non-profit organizations and other local service agencies to provide emergency relief -enhancing our area’s capacity to respond to large scale public health emergencies such as biological/chemical terrorism, epidemic disease or other public health crises.
Professionals from all disciplines (practicing, inactive or retired) - we need nurses, physicians, dentists, EMT’s, pharmacists, veterinarians, teachers, medical technicians or aides, psychologists, social workers, clergy, biologists, IT / administrative staff and many others. All members of the community are encouraged to volunteer for various support functions in a manner appropriate to their skills or training.
Prepare for a worst case scenario - a bioterrorism attack such as smallpox or anthrax. In the case of such an event, the Medical Reserve Corps volunteers will report to one of 13 designated temporary mass prophylaxis clinics. We need the ability to immunize the entire tri-county population within 96 hours. This emergency procedure must be carried out without drawing personnel from current hospital staff that will be needed for the projected high demand at these facilities. Once prepared for this, we can be prepared for any disaster.
Short training sessions will be available to volunteers. The sessions you may choose to attend will depend upon your role in the Medical Reserve Corps. Your time investment in this community-based emergency response organization can be a minimal 2-hour initial training/information session, one-time or annual tabletop exercises or drills and the potential benefit to the health of our community is immeasurable. Optional additional training/ certifications will be offered as available. In the event of an actual community emergency or disaster we do NOT need fear and confusion – we need residents prepared first at home and then to help others. Will you be a part of a long-overdue revitalized effort for organized public health emergency and disaster volunteerism?
