HEALTH DEPARTMENT NEWS

Dead Bird Reporting

***Avian influenza H5N1 is currently a risk to birds throughout the Midwest, including in Illinois and Winnebago County.***

While the Illinois Department of Public Health believes that the risk to people’s health from current H5N1 bird flu viruses is low, individuals should report 5 or more sick or dead wild birds to the local Illinois Department of Natural Resources District Wildlife Biologist which can be found at https://www.wildlifeillinois.org/sidebar/contact-an-idnr-district-wildlife-biologist/. Individuals should report sick or dead domestic/owner poultry the Illinois Department of Agriculture at 217-782-4944 or USDA APHIS Veterinary Services at 1-866-536-7593. Find more information at the IDPH website on avian influenza at: https://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/diseases-and-conditions/influenza/bird-flu.html

To report the location of a dead bird for West Nile Virus testing, please complete the form below. If you do not know the exact address for the location of the bird, please provide a detailed description in the "Comments" box (i.e. the nearest intersection).
