On, Wednesday, July 21, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) confirmed there are elevated metals in groundwater monitoring wells located at the former Beloit Corporation Superfund Site in Rockton. The municipal water supply for the Village of Rockton has NOT been impacted. Initial private well sampling will be conducted near the monitoring wells to determine if any private drinking water wells have been impacted. The Winnebago County Health Department is working with the IEPA and the Illinois Department of Public Health to coordinate sampling of nearby private wells to determine any possible impacts by the elevated metals. Private well owners that are identified for testing will be contacted directly and testing results, including health interpretations, will be provided directly to the property owner. While these results are concerning, knowing about the contamination allows our community to prevent further exposure, identify potential health concerns, and take steps to address the source(s).
