Naloxone Training
When given in time, naloxone, a non-addictive drug, can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save a life. Every home should have naloxone. The Winnebago County Health Department offers a free Naloxone training classes for the community. Free Narcan kits are provided after completion of the class. Naloxone Use Reporting
After using naloxone or NarcanĀ® on an overdose victim, you are asked to complete the Overdose Reversal and Naloxone Administration Reporting Form within 5 business days. This form allows us to maintain data for reporting purposes and allows you to order a new naloxone kit to replace the one you used. To complete the form please click here.
Guarding and Discarding of Medications Safely
Collect and dispose of your unused and unneeded medication in a medication drop box. Drop Boxes are located throughout our community. There is also a drop box on the 4th floor of the Winnebago County Health Department (555 North Court Street) available Monday thru Friday between 8am and 5pm.

Opioid Prescribing Standard
Healthcare facilities throughout Winnebago County are committed to managing pain while preventing opioid use disorder. The healthcare facilities have come together to reduce opioid use disorder through effective management of prescribing and dispensing of opioids. On March 9, 2020 the healthcare systems in Winnebago County announced the establishment of community Opioid Prescribing Standard. Healthcare providers will adhere to these standardized guidelines when prescribing and dispensing opioids, unless special circumstances are justified. All outpatient services such as clinics, urgent care, and specialty practices, including but not limited to orthopedics, psychiatry, general surgery, and emergency departments, will utilize these standards.
